‘On first glance Manal Al Dowayan’s art installation ‘Suspended Together,’ seems almost life-like. Two hundered doves hanging together as if captured in flight. What you notice later are the travel permits pasted on the doves. And that sets you thinking…These permits are used by women residing in Saudi Arabia every time they travel. The installation throws light on issues like freedom, peace, women’s rights and unity all at the same time. It was showcased at the 54th Venice Biennale (2011) and was part of the recently held Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary Arab and Iranian Art where it was sold for QR1198052 ($329, 000).
Manal was born and raised in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Over the course of her education, she partook in a range of courses in differing art institutions in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Bahrain and London. – Abigail Mathias’.
