Alaan Art Space was established by Neama and Mohammed Al Sudairy, two siblings who decided to make a major contribution to Riyadh’s contemporary art scene. It opened in October 2012 with the exhibition ‘Soft Power’ featuring works by young Saudi female artists Sarah Abu Abdallah, Sarah Mohanna Al Abdali and the more established Manal Al Dowayan. The exhibition was curated by London-based Sara Raza (who also works as a curator at Tate Modern).

As the gallery has the ambition to function as an arts community-building space, it also hosts a library and a cafe, and a small shop. The second show of the gallery, dedicated to the chairs manufactured at Vitra, indicates that design is a central part of the art mix on offer.
