Great news from Jeddah: Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives (ALJCI) has announced its plan to build a 20 million Euro arts center in Jeddah, to support the development of Saudi artists through a variety of means: by offering exhibition space, place to meet the public, workshops, scholarships and more.

Fadi Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel, president of ALJCI International, said Art Jameel is the new name for the organization’s arts and culture initiatives that had been ongoing for the last 10 years. The initiative’s sole purpose would be to nurture art and cultural programs” (from the Arab News article published Tue 11 Feb).

Previous activities to support the arts have included the Jameel Prize for Islamic Art (based in London), core support of Edge of Arabia since its inception in 2008, support of art outfits in Saudi Arabia like Arabian Wings and others, and support to The Archive in Dubai.

The work of the shortlisted artists for the Jameel Prize 2013 can be seen until April 2014 at the V&A Museum in London. Among the ten shortlisted artists is one from the Gulf region: Nasser Al Salem.
